When is Enough, Enough?

We live in world of constant demands, and without realizing it we may be putting unnecessary pressure on ourselves to meet an unrealistic ideal. We put pressure on ourselves to be the best mom, father, employee, athlete or whatever else is at the center of our lives in any given moment. It’s easy to forget that perfection doesn’t exist, it’s merely an illusion. Who we choose to be, and how “good” we should be is greatly influenced by our surroundings, and how we choose to see “success.” Yes, I said it, how YOU choose to see success.

Success is determined by how you choose to view progress and growth. I’m not saying you shouldn’t work hard, and do your best. All I’m trying to say is that at the end of the day you are the one that can determine what is enough, without comparing yourself to anyone else. Everyone’s path is different, but we all need to use self-compassion, and to realize we are all doing our best.

Try this practice:
Sit quietly, and become aware of your body and your breath. Notice any sensations, feelings or emotions that arise. Observe without judging or labeling. Bring to mind a person you care deeply about. What do you appreciate about that person? What has this person taught you about life? Now take a moment to reflect on the qualities that make you who you are. What are your strengths? What matters most to you? How have you helped others? After your reflection, sit quietly for a few more minutes. Before you get up, and move on with your day, remind yourself that you are whole and complete. You successes and failures do not change or determine who you are within.
